A one-of-a-kind pendant, handmade in sterling silver and set with a small 10x8mm pear-shaped golden rutilated quartz and labradorite doublet in a classic bezel frame. It hangs on a sterling silver trace chain.
Fine golden needles of rutile seem to float above a shimmering blue labradorite flash, creating a stone with real depth and movement. As it moves in the light, the blue flash glows beneath the gold, so every glance reveals something new.
What is a gemstone doublet?
A doublet is a gemstone made from two layers that are carefully joined together to create something neither stone could achieve on its own.
In this stone, a base of labradorite with a beautiful blue flash is cut and polished flat. A thin, clear layer of golden rutilated quartz, a natural quartz crystal with fine golden rutile needles growing inside it, is then shaped to fit exactly on top. The two layers are bonded together and shaped into a smooth, domed cabochon.
The quartz top acts like a window. It protects the labradorite beneath and gently magnifies its flash, while the golden needles appear to hover above the blue. Creating a doublet takes great precision, as both layers must be cut to match perfectly. This stone was hand cut by skilled lapidaries in India, where gem cutting is a craft passed down through generations.
